Assistant spotlight

Mark played in his first proper Professional event this week in the Scottish Assistants Championship played at Haddington Golf Club.

It, unfortunately, was not his week on the course but a good experience all the same.

Product Spotlight

This week’s product spotlight is the brand-new putter range from PING, The PING Heppler range.

PING, for years, have been challenging for the best putters in golf and with this new range, they have not disappointed. Club news

Monday 14th September saw the second Insomniacs Cup match between the Earlybirds and the Roadrunners. Following their victory last year, holders Earlybirds lined up against the Roadrunners in 6 x 4ball matches in defence of the Cup, which they won 3½ to 2½ last September.

In a very close match, the score was all square at 2 - 2 with The Roadrunners up by 2 on the 17th tee in match 5 and down by 2 on 17th tee in match 6. Match 5 was won by the Roadrunners 2&1 meaning they still needed ½ point to win the Cup. Match 6 went to the last putt with The Roadrunners sinking a 14footer (well - 4 foot) to win the hole, halve the match and win the cup 3½ to 2½. The match was played in great spirit with everyone thoroughly enjoying the game and looking forward to next year’s rematch.

Ladies Championship Final - Sunday 13/09/20

We are pleased to announce that our 2020 Ladies Champion is Liz Stewart.

The finalists were Liz Stewart and Liz Neill and over 20 ladies and a few gents turned out to support them. They were rewarded with a competitive match played between two very talented and experienced players. Strong winds made for challenging, blustery conditions but, despite this, we were treated to some very skilful golf from both players which was a joy to watch with Liz Stewart eventually taking the title at the 16th. In addition to good performances, the match was marked by good humour and courteous play throughout.

Congratulations to our new Ladies Champion.

Thursday 10/09/20 - Helen Hamilton Quaich

Last Thursday saw the 7th competition in our mini-season. Despite some windy and unseasonal weather, 40 ladies competed for the trophy. Well done everyone who participated!

The results are as follows:

Kim Murdoch won going out in 50 coming back in 44 with 4 pars beating Susan Reynolds by 3 shots.

Kim Murdoch 94 - 24c = 70
Susan Reynolds 102 - 29c = 73

Competition news

Pro Shop Saturday Sweep results:

Well done to Jim Johnstone who took the spoils in this week’s Saturday Pro Shop sweep with 36 points. Drew Boyd came second on the day with 34 (BIH) and also had the only 2 of the day.

On Wednesday the 9th September the Gibson Salver was competed for in some extremely windy conditions.

James Nelson was the eventual winner with a nett 67, one of only two scores to break par all day. James won with a better inward half over Scott Ireland who carded an amazing scratch 69, nett 67.

Some great golf on show in testing conditions gents. Well played, keep it up!

The next club competition is this Saturday so make sure you all get your names in for a chance to get your handicaps cut.

My regular sweep on non-competition days has been well received by a proportion of you die-hard golfers out there and I am happy to continue with this option. However, as some participating competitors are approaching these rounds as they would under normal competition play I would not like the sweep to add to the issue of slow play. This was never my intention. The golf course pace of play protocols has been fully investigated by the Clubs Committee and require an extended tee off interval as well as a restriction to a 3-ball format in order to maintain.

These protocols are not in place during non-competition days.

Therefore, if you wish my pro-shop sweeps to continue, I urge you to follow these simple rules: -

1. These sweeps are exclusively played using the STABLEFORD format.

2. You do not need to complete every hole to remain in the competition

3. Do not waste time finishing the hole for anything more than a net bogey.

4. Be aware of your position on the course at all times.

5. Don’t hold up groups behind you.

6. Enjoy the competition but remember not everybody is playing in it.

Slow play causes severe irritation and is the most common complaint received at the club, so please don’t let my sweep contribute to it.

Please be considerate and enjoy your golf.

Golf on Tour

This weekend's U.S. Open will feature plenty of familiar faces with the likes of Dustin Johnson, Tiger Woods and new-father Rory McIlroy all teeing it up in New York.

Given the dominance of these players in recent years, it might be foolish to look past them when considering who might be crowned champion, but that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

Webb Simpson is certainly worth a look in our eyes. A couple of wins and regular top-10 finishes in the just-finished season means confidence will be sky-high. Speaking of confidence, Collin Morikawa won the PGA Championship in just his second Major start and looks like he’s just warming up.

Will fatherhood have Rory firing or tiring? Can DJ get over the line at another Major? Or is it time for somebody else to take centre-stage at Winged Foot GC? We can't wait to find out!
