Hi folks,

The fairways are back on and it looks like mother nature is looking down on us with good intentions with this week being nice and next weeks forecast looking much the same.

One member took advantage of the dry conditions on Saturday after not playing for a few months and that was Kenny McAlpine. His first round back contained something that none of his rounds have contained in his 48 years of golfing, a hole in 1! He managed his on the 10th tee playing 135 yards into the wind, you can’t get much better than that. Congratulations to Kenny, hopefully it won’t take you as long to get your next one.

The lottery Bonus Ball still has some spaces remaining but it is filling up fast. With a chance to win the £1180 jackpot I’m not surprise it’s been a huge hit, just imagine the purchases you could make. The standard bonus ball has also started again with two St Nicholas Crested Shirts up for grabs.

Gareth and Calum played in their third PGA Fourball event this week in tough windy conditions up at Craigielaw Golf Club. Sadly, this round didn’t match the grandeur of the previous two weeks but considering the conditions -3 was a good score getting them T7th place.

This week has seen another few deliveries land in the shop including the new PING and Odyssey putter range for 2019. Pop in to have a look if you are passing.

Coaching corner

Time to upgrade?

As the golf season is approaching fast you may be looking at upgrading or changing your clubs. This could be the perfect start to having your best golfing season yet. Before purchasing any clubs we would always recommend being fitted for them so that they are perfectly suited to your swing. You can walk away with 100% confidence when standing over each shot knowing you have a club or clubs that are right for you. All it takes is a few good swings to get a good result.

Here in the shop we have the newest releases from Titleist, Callaway and PING with multiple shaft, loft and lie options for each. We use FlightScope to compare different clubs and look closely at the important numbers such as carry distance and club head speed to ensure you have perfectly suited clubs.

This time of year is the best time to think about changing your equipment with only a couple of weeks to go until the golfing season really kicks off. This will allow some time to get used to your new equipment and see how it performs on the golf course.

Competition news

Summer Handicap League

The first match of the Summer Handicap League took place on Sunday with a home match against Royal Troon. It was one of the windiest days so far this year so its amazing that the match went ahead. St Nicholas got off to a great start winning the match 4-2.

Greenkeepers shed

From the Course

The fairways are just back on for the new season to kick off and I’m sure we are all enjoying being back on the turf. It is still early in the year though and the soil temperature is still rather low so grass growth will still be limited.

Our greenkeepers do a great job of keeping our course in great condition all year round but one thing that is hard to keep on top of is divots. With the number of rounds being played on the course at a high we could all do the course a favour and make use of the divot bottles on the first tee. We all have that divot that we can’t find or replace because it turns to dust.

Filling it with divot mix makes all the difference. If you use a trolley it is so easy to just put a bottle over the handle and help make our golf course as good as it can be. Even filling in a couple of extra divots around your own is a massive help.

Junior academy

Rules Seminar

With the new rules starting this year there are plenty of golfers heading out on to the course feeling a little confused, I’m sure many of you have dropped the ball wrong a couple of times, I know I have.

The juniors also have issues with the rules when they are out on the course so our clubs resident rules expert Colin Ramsay put together another seminar for the kids to take part in. With over 30 kids taking part I’m sure they will now have a good grasp of the new rules when they go out in their medals.

Ladies Shop

Ladies pay attention for the next Special Mail from us because it is a great one just for you.

As you all know the space that we have to work with in the shop sadly doesn’t give the ability to stock and display a good range of Ladies product but thanks to Foremosts Click and Collect Service you have access to even more stock than can fit in the Pro Shop.

Entering his prime?

“I’m getting older, but I feel I’m getting better” – Paul Casey.

There’s hope for us all yet then. 41-year-old Englishman Paul Casey claimed his own piece of PGA Tour history by becoming the first man to successfully defend the Valspar Championship at the weekend.

For Casey, it seems victories are like buses; you wait nine years between tournament wins and then two come along in the space of 12-months, and it could not have come at a better time. Three weeks out from The Masters, the entire field toiled during windy conditions on the Copperhead Course but, despite shooting a 1-over 72 on Sunday, Casey held his nerve to steal a one-shot victory.

Johnson breaks wind

Before Sunday's play commenced, many thought it would be a Ryder Cup-style shootout between world number one Dustin Johnson and Casey. However, this never really materialised as DJ struggled to his first over-par final round since the Genesis Open (mid-Februray!) with a three-over-par 74.

With no birdies, it also proved to be the first time since the 2017 WGC HSBC-Championship that Johnson failed to record a single hole under par in a final round. Despite this, the American still ended tied-sixth for his fourth straight top-ten finish; not bad for an off day.

Paul Casey’s back-to-back Valspar victories is impressive stuff, but he is not the first Englishman to win the tournament.
