The juniors had a lovely crisp winter's day this past Sunday, 27 November to play their winter order of merit game. I noticed some great improvements in a lot of their games and I think that this is testament to the fact that the kids are now getting used to playing on a golf course.
This week's tied winners were our very own Junior Captain Hamish Ablett and Patrick Smiley with great scores of 24 shots over 5-holes off the white tees. Well done.
If you are interested in helping out or potentially sponsoring the juniors, whether it's just for the one week or winter period, please get in touch.
This week's Senior Section was a busy one with 40 players showing up on Monday. The format for the day was foursomes. Well done to John Reynolds and George Tindle who were this week's winners.
This week I was invited along to the 'The Inner Sanctums' end of season Christmas day out and prize giving. We were a little unlucky with the fact that the ground was still solid after three nights of hard frost so winter greens it was for the round.
After being asked to pull the cards for the draw I was paired with Greg Watson and Alan Golightly for the round. We all played fairly well, had a very enjoyable round of golf and topped it off with a superb meal by Grant and the staff to finish the day. A few drinks were consumed along the way and finally prize giving took place where Paul Nairn was presented with this year's Quaich. Paul had a great score of 43 points on the day, well done!
Just a quick word of thanks to 'The Inner Sanctum' group for the invite.
Q. Gareth and Mark are partners in the clubs winter foursome competition. Gareth hits a fantastic drive at the 6th hole but the ball finishes in a greenside bunker. Mark plays the bunker shot but fails to get the ball out and in frustration takes a swing with his club into the sand. This action does not improve the position of the ball in the bunker so Gareth plays a perfect shot which finishes in the hole. What's the ruling?
Find out what the ruling is in next week's newsletter...
Did you get last week's rule correct?
Q. Jimmy and Johnny are partners in the clubs winter foursome competition. Johnny plays a fantastic drive at the 8th hole, leaving the ball in the perfect position. Jimmy, not confident about playing the shot over the quarry, swings at the ball, but deliberately misses. Johnny then plays their third shot to a few feet of the pin. Is this permissible?
A. No. Since Jimmy had no intention of moving the ball, he did not play a stroke and it remained his turn to play. When Johnny played instead of Jimmy they incurred a match play penalty of loss of hole. However, had Jimmy attempted to strike the ball and accidentally missed then the stroke would have counted. Rule 29-1, Decision 29-1/6 and 29-1/7.
